(also called Catchweed, Cleavers)
Galium aparine
- Winter annual. Spreads by seed.
- Has long square stems and forms mats.
- Has narrow leaves that form whorls containing 6 – 8 leaves. Leaves are long and thin.
- Hooked spines along the base of leaves allow it to cling to objects (animal fur, socks, pants, etc).
- Has white flowers with 4 petals.
- Thrives in moist areas, usually in the shade.
- Easy to remove by hand-pulling or herbicides.
