Weed of the Week: Dame’s Rocket
DAME’S ROCKET
Hesperis matronalis
This pretty flower is a weed?? Yes! Although it is often sold as part of “wildflower” seed mixes, this plant is a prolific reseeder. It can quickly take over an area, competing with native species.
- Short-lived perennial that blooms from May to August with clusters of pink, white or purple flowers.
- Grows in woodlands, roadsides and open areas.
- Often mistaken for garden phlox! Dame’s rocket flowers have 4 petals (not 5 like phlox), and its leaves are alternate (phlox leaves are opposite).
- Plants can be pulled by hand before going to seed. Broadleaf herbicides may also be used.
