Milkweed is often considered a pest, but 450 different insects call it lunch! It is one of nature’s super foods. Carnivores like birds and dragonflies eat the insects, creating a massive food web based on milkweed plants. See how milkweed handles this hungry crowd.
An educational presentation, led by Ann Pedder Reilly, will feature some of the milkweed munchers that might live in your neighborhood. Explore the link between milkweed and Monarch butterflies. Learn interesting facts about milkweed plants and their interactions with people.
The classroom presentation is followed by a scavenger hunt in the garden and nearby natural areas to look for milkweed plants and their insect visitors. It is recommended that participants wear long pants and use insect repellent as some areas may not be mowed.
